Course description
The Contraception Overview and Practical Essentials (COPE) course content is aligned with the New Zealand Aotearoa's Guidance on Contraception and covers efficacy, side effects, contraindications, and "what to use when" for the following:
- Combined oral contraceptive pill/pill teach
- Contraceptive implants
- Depo Provera
- Emergency contraception
- Fertility awareness
- Intrauterine devices
- Progestogen only contraceptive pill/pill teach
This course is wholly self-directed and completed online (6 hours).
This course is separate to the LARC training courses and is available to anyone wishing to gain a much broader understanding and knowledge of all contraception available in New Zealand.

Te Whatu Ora funding may apply - see below for criteria.
The Midwifery Council has allocated 5 points for midwives who complete this course.

Prerequisites
- Full New Zealand Nursing, Midwifery or Medical Registration
- Current Practicing Certificate
For a Te Whatu Ora funded place on this course, you must meet at least one of the following criteria. The highest priority for funding starts at 1:
- Māori nurses/doctors working for Māori providers
- Non-Māori nurses/doctors working for Māori providers
- Pacific nurses/doctors working for Pacific providers
- Non-Pacific nurses/doctors working for Pacific providers
- Māori nurses/doctors working for health service providers
Community/rural/urban nurses/doctors (including Practice Nurses, Well Child Tamariki Ora Nurses)
Te Whatu Ora employed health professionals are excluded from the funding criteria.
