Free contraception visits
-
Contraception is basic health care. Women tend to pay for the bulk of contraception — creating an inequitable financial burden.
-
Cost is a barrier to contraception access for many people in Aotearoa
These are some of the costs you’re likely to face if you decide to get contraception:
- Transport to and from appointments
- An initial doctor’s appointment or procedure
- Follow up doctor’s appointments or procedures
- Yearly doctor’s visits to renew your prescription
- Replacing your expired contraception — LARCs need to be replaced every 3-5 years
What are we doing about it?
We need to ensure universal access to contraception for everyone in Aotearoa! Removing cost barriers is an essential step on the path to that realising that reality.
We have made, and continue to make, submissions to government and government agencies — advocating for free contraception visits. This would remove one significant barrier to contraception access, across the board.
At our clinics, visits are funded to be free for people under age 22. Free funded visits for people under age 22 is a start — but it falls short of creating equity in access for all people in Aotearoa.
