What is contraception?

There are all sorts of contraception types. Most contraception stops an egg from meeting a sperm. If an egg meets, and accepts, a sperm, fertilisation happens — which often leads to pregnancy.  

Some types of contraception work better than others.

Long-acting reversible contraception (LARCs) are the most effective type of contraception. Some LARCs are more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. 

Condoms are the least effective contraception for preventing pregnancy — but they are the best at protecting you from STIs. That’s why it’s good to use condoms, plus a second form of contraception, when you have sex. 

Only condoms and oral dams protect you from sexually transmissible infections (STIs). It’s a good idea to learn how to use condoms correctly. Be sure to use plenty of lube when you have sex with a condom. 

Other types of contraception work to protect against pregnancy.
