What are condoms?
-
Condoms are a barrier method of contraception. Barrier methods stop sperm and infection from passing between people during sex. There are three types of barrier methods:
- External condoms — these go over a penis, sex toy, or strap
- Internal condoms — these are inserted into a vagina or anus
- Oral dams — these go between a mouth and an anus or vulva

How to get condoms
-
You’re allowed to buy condoms at any age.
Condoms are available on prescription from all our clinics, or you can buy condoms and lube from our web shop.
We can prescribe condoms over the phone too!
Need condoms now? We often have a bowl of free condoms at our clinics — no appointment needed.

What does an appointment cost?
-
It’s cheaper to get condoms on prescription from one of our clinics, a Sexual Health Centre, or a doctor.
Our appointments are free for New Zealand residents under 22 years old. If you are 22 years, or older, you’ll pay our standard appointment fees — unless you are eligible for subsidised health care, or you have a Community Services Card. If you are eligible for subsidised health care, your appointment will be free. If you have a Community Services Card, your appointment will cost $5.
If you’re not a New Zealand resident, you’ll need to pay non-resident fees.
Check out our fees page for more details.
